Native to southwestern Guangxi in China and Northern Vietnam where it grows in a rugged environment on steep karst limestone cliffs, this petite palm forms a low mound of light green, flat, fan-shaped leaves. As opposed to the closely related G. argyrata, which remains stemless, it grows a slender trunk with age that can reach up to 2 m (7 ft.) tall and is clothed in coarse, dark fibers. The leaves appear wispier and are rather green than silvery below. It is very slow at first but later develops into a reliable and hardy palm that will do well in all warm temperate and some tropical climates. It is also great for cultivating in pots and perfect for growing as a bonsai.
