A stemmless species that sports a dense crown of hundreds of pale green, narrow, coarse, grasslike leaves. A mature plant can reach a diameter of up to 2 m (7 ft.). Native to Arizona , New Mexico , Texas and northern Mexico , it inhabits high altitude grass and woodland between 1000 and 1650 m (3500 to 5500 ft.). It is one of the hardiest plants and can sustain very severe freezes without harm.
