 From the west coast of the USA and Mexico , these well known palms hardly need an introduction, except, possibly as garden plants. If they are planted out and protected for a few winters, they can develop quite good resistance to cold. They are more usually seen as house- or conservatory plants, requiring bright light, and an abundance of water. Don't assume they are drought-tolerant because of their desert origin; their deep roots have access to permanent ground water.
