A large Yucca native to the Central Mexican High Plateau, where it is found on the fringes of the Chihuahuan Desert on rocky slopes between 1700 and 2700 m (5700 and 8600 ft.) elevation. It produces a sturdy trunk with a massive base, usually profusely branching in old trees. The very stiff, dull green leaves form a dense crown. It is similar to Yucca filifera but can easily be distinguished by its upright, rather than drooping inflorescence. It is hardy to drought and severe freezes.
